Sofia – Rojen Monastery – Rupite – Petrich - Melnik
Departure at 7:30 A.M. from “Aleksandar Nevski” Square (behind the Cathedral, on “Oborishte” St), Sofia City. We strongly recommend You make a preliminary reservation. Rojen Monastery, dating from 13th century, is located to the east of the town of Melnik. The iconostasis, the woodcarving and the miraculous Icon of the Virgin in the monastery's church are true masterpieces. Rupite is a sacred place where You can visit the temple built by the famous Bulgarian clairvoyant and healer Baba Vanga. The town of Petrich is situated at the foot of the Belasitsa Mountain and is proud of its five East Orthodox Christian churches. Near Petrich is the crater of the an extinct volcano, its appearance being shaped by the volcanic hill of Kozhuh. The Samuil Fortress is a national park-museum where You can visit the bronze statue of the Bulgarian ruler, as well as relics from the fortification outfit, built in 11th century by Samuil. Melnik – Bansko – Melnik
The town of Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria. Here are preserved original medieval houses along with fortresses relics. Melnik is also known for its wine-cellars, producing the best red wine in the country. The surrounding nature is unique and beautiful – here You can witness the biggest rocky pyramids in Bulgaria. The most famous winter resort Bansko will surprise You with its rich history. Here You can visit the home houses of the poet Nikola Vaptsarov and that of Neofit Rilski - a 19th century Bulgarian monk, noted teacher and artist. The “Sveta Troitsa” (Holly Trinity) Church is fascinating and the exhibition, dedicated to the most famous citizen of Bansko – Paisii Hilendarski - a Bulgarian clergyman and a key Bulgarian National Revival figure, is remarkable. Melnik – Rila Monastery – Sofia
The Rila Monastery is the most outstanding example of the Bulgarian church art and architecture. The “Rojdestvo Bogorodichno” Church (Church of the Virgin Birth) with the miraculous Icon of the Virgin and the exquisitely elaborated iconostasis, cook-house and the monastery's museum, where the long and heroic history of the monastery is kept together with the famous Rafail's Cross made by a monk named Rafail taking him twelve years, the Hrelyova tower and breathtaking views over the Rila Mountain and the surrounding nature. Tourists will be transported back to Sofia to “Aleksandar Nevski” Square at night.
