The town of Kavarna is a modern town in north-east Bulgaria, Dobrich Province. It is the third biggest town in the province after Dobrich and Balchik with good infrastructure and developed services sphere. The town has a small yacht harbour, fishing base, spacious beach and resort complex, set up by the bay, formed also from the small river with a charming name “The Valley of the Orioles”. The slitted limestone cliffs and the whole beach are very picturesque, especially viewed over from the sea. Kavarna has a wide centre with the Fountains, the Post Office, the Community Centre as well as many offices, banks, bars and coffee shops.
HISTORY: Kavarna is one of the antique towns on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. There was an ancient Thracian settlement on the present-day Kavarna territory. In 5th century BC the Greek colonists were attracted by the convenient bay, the abundant springs, the rich land and the strategic location of the eminences. They established the Bizone colony on the plateau of Chirakman Cape but in the first half of 1st c. BC in a catastrophic earthquake the front part of the cape crashed and most of the settlement sank into the sea. During the Roman Empire period the town was rebuilt under the same name and flourished fast. In 7th century the town was destroyed by Slav and proto-Bulgarian tribes which settled in Chirakman Cape and established Karvuna settlement. During the medieval period Karvuna was already a famous town. With its present-day name the settlement was mentioned for the first time in the beginning of 15th century. During the Ottoman invasion the town was nearly destroyed but in the first half of 17th century the town was rebuilt again. The year of 1877 was a year to remember in the history of the town when Kavarna citizens raised to fight for independence. The town was put under fire and massacre and only after the Independence it revived as a living monument of revolted Kavarna citizens' heroism.
CLIMATE: The climate in Kavarna is moderate continental, under the strong influence of the Black Sea. The average annual temperature is 11,8°C, the average July temperature - 22,4°C. Rainfalls – maximum during autumn (134 mm), minimum during spring and winter (104 mm), the snow coverage lasts around 78 days.
TOURISM CONDITIONS. BEACHES: The picturesque Kavarna seaboard spreads over 42 km with total area of 74 000 sq.m. beach line, slightly uneven, with formed small natural beaches which are contributing to the tranquil holidays of the tourists during the active season. Kavarna Municipality has a well-built infrastructure in the resort zones – Ikantalaka, Kavarna and Rusalka. Kavarna resort zone is located in 2 km from the town in a small bay where two valleys are joining together.
LOCATION: Kavarna is in 64 km from the city of Varna, in 49 km from the town of Dobrich and 18 km north-east of the town of Balchik. TRANSPORT: How can we reach Kavarna? By air plane: The fastest way to reach Kavarna from Sofia is taking the plane Sofia-Varna. From Varna you can take a bus or a taxi to Kavarna. There are regular buses between Varna and Kavarna. By bus: You can take a direct bus to Kavarna from the Central Bus Station in Sofia. During the summer season a preliminary ticket purchase is recommended (at least a week prior to the travel date). By train: You can take a train to Varna from the Central Railway station in Sofia. From Varna you can take a bus to Kavarna.
ATTRACTIONS: Among the biggest events in the cultural programme of the town are the traditional International All-Bulgarian Youth Fair “Bulgaria In Our Hearts”, National Festival of Amateur Theatres with international participation, the attractive Mussel and Fish Fest, the Festival of the Sea. The town has established itself as the rock music capital of Bulgaria. World famous performers and bands are visiting Kavarna every year - Whitesnake, Dio, Deep Purple, Manowar, Scorpions, Saxon, Accept, Nazareth, Billy Idol, Twisted Sister, Philipp Kirkorov, Aria and Bulgarian bands and performers – Signal, B.T.R., Ahat, Control, etc. You can visit a rock concert, you can go sightseeing or just to take a walk, or have fun in one of the nigh places, or indulge in fishing, diving, paragliding, bird observation or just sun-bathing. In the central part of the town you can find all the facilities you need – coffee shops, bars, restaurants, hotels, shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, cosmetic parlours and public buildings. The Hamam (Turkish bath) is a significant cultural monument and an interesting tourist site. It was built in the beginning of 15th century and comprises a massive domed bath built from stones. Today the building is completely reconstructed. Churches: “St Georgi” built in 1836, “Preuspenie Bogorodichno” (The Church of the Assumption) built in 1860, the church is a place of interest for its architectural design and valued icons. The old fountains in the valley toward the sea – these were 12 spring foundations, most of them destroyed and few partly preserved until today. Another attraction site - the Old Shops on the harbour.

HEALTH & BALNEOLOGY: Here are some hotels offering varied spa procedures: “Otdih” Spa Hotel, 4*, established in 2008 the hotel is situated in the centre of the town among a picturesque park, 1000 metres of the beach. “Valentine” Spa Villa, situated on the Kavarna sea shore, one of the rare examples of materializing of the luxurious holiday. EXCURSIONS AND SIGHTSEEING AROUND KAVARNA: The town of Kavarna and its surrounding areas are rich in archaeological finds, architectural monuments, with antique and medieval settlements spread over the coastal line. You can see remains of ancient fortresses and fortification facilities, artificial and natural cave formations, sacrificial stones, rock and other churches, ancient harbour facilities, Thracian burial mounds, necropolis and other various cultural monuments, witnesses of the millenary history of the region. The region has a potential for developing of: - sea and holiday tourism in the Sea zone – the town of Kavarna, Ikantalaka vicinity and Rusalka holiday settlement; - rural tourism in the villages of Balgarevo, Kamen bryag, Topola and Bozhurets; - cognitive tourism in the “Yaylata” and “Kaliakra” natural archaeological reserves.
