In the Middle Ages and 19th century wheat was produced in the region and exported. There were windmills and watermills around the town; flour was exported as well and passing ships were supplied. Beside the grains, there was large grapes production too in the region. The working population was grouped in fishermen, sailors, captains, ship owners and traders societies. In 1913 East Thrace refugees settled in the town. The harbour was built in 1931 and reconstructed and widened during the last two decades.
