MRHS presents the Summer 2024 Spotlight: Dr. Andrea Hamilton '99
Dr. Andrea Hamilton (Class of ’99) has been a proud and accomplished educator for nearly 20 years, a career that was shaped by her experiences as a Maria Regina student. Today, she is the principal in the Elmsford Union Free District where she continues a life-time commitment to help prepare students for future success.
After she graduated from the renowned all-girls Catholic high school, Dr. Hamilton earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Temple University, a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from The College of New Rochelle, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Manhattanville University, and her Doctorate from St. John’s University.
Although it’s been nearly 30 years since Hamilton first became a Tiger, her alma mater has been very “near and dear” to her. So much so that, in addition to her ongoing support of Maria Regina, Dr. Hamilton created a scholarship in 2013 for a graduating senior of color with the intention of pursuing a path in humanitarian service.
Dr. Hamilton treasures the many fond memories at Maria Regina. She recalls: “My first memory is meeting Sr. Danielle with my parents, and instantly I felt her warmth and genuine care for me as a young person, her support and encouragement really set the tone for my experience. "
Among her most favorite memories were serving as a member of the student council and attending the overnight retreat, school dances, spirit/dress down days, pep rallies, junior ring day, senior sister day, and graduation.
“Although math was not my favorite subject, it was my favorite class because it was challenging, and even when I wanted to give up, Ms. Donovan always made me feel like I could do it even when it was hard, and I did.” That’s a testament to what makes an excellent teacher, someone who can inspire and motivate a student to gain an appreciation for and do well in a subject initially not to their liking.
If I had to offer words of wisdom to my teenage self that would serve to inspire current students it would be to continue to work hard and focus on the things that matter! School matters so pay attention and study hard, your grades will be the gateway to your college experiences, you have the opportunity to go to college on full scholarships by demonstrating that you are a well rounded young lady. Education matters, take advantage of every opportunity to learn and build on learning more about what you love. If something bothers you speak up, you are part of making changes so make sure your voice is heard. Life lesson beyond high school, Pray more, worry less and trust God’s plan.
Dr. Hamilton holds a special place in her heart for her favorite teachers Ms. Donovan, Sr. Eileen, and Ms. Perry. “They all truly cared about their girls and had a great sense of humor. They were always there and built an excellent rapport with their students.”
The busy educator enjoys spending time with her family and friends, vacations, reading, and practicing mindfulness and self-care outdoors, in the gym or Pilates studio.
